Platitudes will be the death of us

– Rules are made to be broken, he said.

– No they’re not, she said. They can be broken and on occasion probably should be, but they weren’t written so they could be broken. Think of the Christianity fairy tale. They (or He if you’re that way inclined) didn’t come up with the Ten Commandments so people would disregard it. ‘Thou Shall Not Kill. Yeah, write that, then they will kill. Because rules are made to be broken.’

– Well it’s just something people say.

– No I know, but… It’s not very precise, is it?

– Does it matter?
